Semi-finals showdown at ASB Classic
Coming off quarter-final upsets, Jack Sock and Roberto Bautista Agut face the top two seeds today for a chance to reach the ASB Classic finals match.
Jack Sock, the world number 26, knocked off the 12th-ranked Kevin Anderson to earn his 10th win over a Top 20 player since the start of the 2015 season. The 23-year-old American attempts to end a nine-match losing streak against Top 10 opponents when he meets four-time champion and world number eight David Ferrer today.
It’s been some time since Roberto Bautista Agut beat a Top 10 player and he will have to step it up another level today if he wants to progress further in this tournament. The 25th-ranked Spaniard is 0- 17 against Top 10 opponents since stunning then-No. 5 Tomas Berdych at 2014 ATP Masters 1000 Indian Wells. Bautista Agut got as close to defeating a Top 10 player as you can get in the quarter-finals when he eliminated 11th-ranked John Isner. Bautista Agut plays second seed and fan favourite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
Also exciting news for kiwi fans is that a Kiwi is guaranteed a spot in the Auckland doubles final, with New Zealand’s Marcus Daniell, Artem Sitak and Michael Venus contesting one of today’s semi-finals. Daniell and Sitak, the reigning Montpellier champions, will face Venus and Mate Pavic of Croatia, the reigning Nice champions. In the other doubles semi-final, Americans Eric Butorac and Scott Lipsky meet Austrians Julian Knowle and Oliver Marach.
