With some of the top male players in the world fighting it out for a place in the quarter finals, it made for fast and furious matches today.

Last years champion and top seed Jack Sock was knocked out in his first match at the ASB Classic. Peter Gojowczyk didn’t waste any time swiftly moving past in a straight set finish 63 63 securing his spot in the quarter finals.

Third seed Sam Querrey struggled to get the upper hand during his match against opponent Jiri Vesely. Vesely winning the first set and Querrey fighting back in the second. In the end, Vesely outlasted his higher ranked opponent to win the match 64 6(10)7 76(5).

After losing two top seeds the crowd had plenty to get excited about with four time champion David Ferrer securing his spot in the quarter finals 62 62. Closely matched Joao Sousa could not match the pace and strength of fan favourite Ferrer.

The highly anticipated match of the day met the hype much to the delight of a packed out crowd. Denis Shapovalov sailed past Rogerio Dutra Silva 63 62 during the first round, which then led him to a difficult match against second seed Juan Martin del Potro. Shapovalov was unable to break the experienced Del Potro, losing in straight sets 63 62.

All eyes will be on court tomorrow with the top four decided. Heavy hitter Juan Martin del Potro will take on Karen Khachanov during the night session. This is Del Potro’s first time back to New Zealand since 2009 when he was champion. He is well on his way to reclaiming the champion title for 2018.

Don’t miss Michael Venus closing out the night session with his doubles match providing world class tennis for fans to enjoy.

Be sure to purchase a special tennis ball from around the grounds during the day session to help raise funds for Ronald McDonald House New Zealand and the chance to win some amazing prizes!
